The Lames are on the Radio

Am I the only one who thinks it is totally lame to bring Thom Brennaman on in place of Steve Stewart?

A source said the Reds had contacted the Arizona Diamondbacks for permission to talk to Brennaman and have talked to him. Marty would not comment Sunday on the possibility of Thom getting the job. Thom could not be reached for comment.

No comment? You know what that means: it might as well be etched in freaking stone.

Someone at least tell me that this guy is a good announcer. Otherwise, I just won't be able to handle the schmaltzy, lovey-dovey, white-breadness of it all. And when Marty retires in a few years, maybe they can land Sean Casey to replace him.

Quoth RHM: “Someone at least tell me that this guy is a good announcer.”

Okay: This guy is a good announcer. 🙂

The thing is, his contract with Arizona runs through 2009, so I’m not fully convinced he’s going to be the replacement for Stewart yet.

Seriously, RHM, if he does come here, a lot of people are going to scream nepotism, but Thom Brennaman is an accomplished broadcaster in his own right. He’s called Reds games before (After he graduated from Ohio University, he called play-by-play for the Reds along with his dad back in the late 1980s), he did the Cubs broadcasts in the early 1990’s and he has been with the Diamondbacks since they joined the majors as their primary TV announcer. He’s done six consecutive League Championship Series for Fox. Nepotism is probably a word that was invented by somebody who did not have any children.

Of course there are a lot of people out there who don’t seem to like any of Fox’s announcers, and they don’t like Brennaman any more than they like, say, McCarver. But in my opinion, he will definitely be an improvement over Stewart.

Hi there, HMZ. Long time, no see.

It’s not so much the nepotism that bothers me as the missing an opportunity to do something really cool. They could have gotten a Spanish-speaker. They could have gotten a stat-head. They could have gotten a woman. What they’re getting is Marty Jr.

Sure, Power of Tradition and all, but does that have mean More of the Same Old Thing?
