Game Thread: Game 4 versus the Pirates

I'd say that it's like the division turned upside-down to have the Pirates in first and the Cardinals and Astros bringing up the rear, but I don't like what that would mean about the Reds at all. Our boys can start setting things straight tonight.

C. Trent's got the line-ups:

The Buccos
Chris Duffy CF
Jack Wilson SS
Jason Bay LF
Adam LaRoche 1B
Ronny Paulino C
Xavier Nady RF
Jose Bautista 3B
Jose Castillo 2B
Paul Maholm P

Your Cincinnati Reds
Ryan Freel CF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnación 3B
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Jeff Conine 1B
Alex Gonzalez SS
David Ross C
Matt Belisle P

Maholm doesn't exactly suck and Belisle is pretty untested; this could be a tough one. The sub-freezing temperatures won't help: a frozen ball can't absorb as much energy from a bat. But they've been boning up on their small ball, so it should be all good, right?

Pretty interesting to see that Narron’s finally fixed the line-up (i.e. Dunn not batting 2nd). This line-up looks just about as good as it can look. My only question is whether Gonzo or Ross should bat 8th. Gonzo isn’t historically productive, and Ross has some pop in his bat, which you’d like to see further up in the line-up.

  2. Red Hot Mama says:

Hey, pardog. Great to have you here.

I imagine we’ll see Ross and Gonzalez in each of those positions. Each has plenty of holes in his swing, but it’s nice to have their threat of power even at the bottom of the line-up.

And, of course, when Milton’s pitching, you’ve even got a threat in the 9-hole. Which you’ll need.

  3. Red Hot Mama says:

Belisle’s induced two ground balls so far…too bad the infield isn’t helping him. What the heck did we get Gonzalez for again??

  4. Red Hot Mama says:

Nice play on Conine to get the would-be double play at first and home if not for the fact that the ball went foul. 😥

  5. Red Hot Mama says:

Man, Belisle looks fantastic, but where’s the rest of the team? Error by Griffey allows the runner on second to advance to third after a run scores.

  6. BubbaFan says:

    I blame the weather.

They cancelled the Clippers game due to cold.

  7. Red Hot Mama says:

All right Brandon Phillips! Single-handedly ties it at 1s.

  8. Red Hot Mama says:

Hi, BF. I’ve never heard of a game being called for cold before. Do they do that often?

  9. Red Hot Mama says:

Dunner comes through with the single again. What happened to Mr. Outcomes?

    Not complaining, mind you…

  10. Red Hot Mama says:

They walked EdE to get to Griffey. Makes sense so far this season.

  11. BubbaFan says:

I have never heard of a game being called for cold before, but they did it for the Detroit game yesterday.

  12. Red Hot Mama says:

Chris just called two consecutive curveballs “back-to-back uncle Charlies”. I think he’s been hanging with Brantley.

  13. Zeldink says:

Is an Uncle Charlie better or worse than an Uncle Buck?

Hey look, a hit to right that Griffey couldn’t catch.

  14. BubbaFan says:

Bubba just homered in Louisville. Into the seats in right field.

  15. Red Hot Mama says:

    Go Bubba!

What’s an Uncle Buck? You mean that movie with John Candy?

  16. Zeldink says:

Yeppers. That’s the reference. Not a good one, mind you, but a reference nonetheless.

Belisle (Buh-LIZZ-ul) seems to have settled down after the first. I hope he does well this year.

  17. Red Hot Mama says:

That’s our new official RHM pronunciation of “Belisle”; thanks, Zel!

  18. smartelf says:

OK, I officially like Jeff Conine. Welcome to Cincinnati, Jeff.

  19. Red Hot Mama says:

Griffey hustles down the line and beats out the throw. What do you bet the guys who bitch at him for not hustling won’t remember it.

    CONINE HOMER! 3-run job!!

Conine: the new Aurilia. Only older.

Oh, and before I forget, nice baserunning by Encarnación on that hit by Griffey.

  20. Redsfan68 says:

    Sweeeeet !!!!

  21. BubbaFan says:

Conine the Barbarian comes through in the clutch.

  22. Zeldink says:

And nice hustle by Griffey to arrive at first safely.

Here I was just wondering how Conine would handle the spot where Aurilia shone so often last year. Go Conine!

  23. BubbaFan says:

And the Twins at White Sox game has been banged due to the cold.

  24. Red Hot Mama says:

A Twins/White Sox game just *sounds* cold, doesn’t it?

  25. smartelf says:

Apparently they just accounced tomorrow’s Reds game will be moved to daytime as it is expected to be even colder here tomorrow night.

  26. Red Hot Mama says:

Aw man…*NOW* where will the drunk young men of Cincinnati spend their shirtless Saturday night?

  27. smartelf says:

My question is where are the shirtless chicks at? 😛

  28. Red Hot Mama says:

    Well, there’s one right he…I mean…um…nevermind. >:-)

  29. smartelf says:

Drunken… I forgot about drunken… that’s important because it improves my chances exponentially.

RHM- I bet you’d get a million hits tomorrow if you start a live drunken topless baseball chick cam on this website.

  30. smartelf says:

I’ve got something on AGON… this guy gets a lot of borderline strikes called against him because he makes himself look guilty by staring at the exact location of the pitch as it enters the catcher’s mitt… better to sell it as outside/low by simply laying off and selling it with your body language as a ball…. know what I mean?

  31. Redsfan68 says:

    Double by Freeeeel !!!

  32. Red Hot Mama says:

I dunno man, gravity is not a kind mistress.

Go Freel! It seems like that going for second hadn’t been working for him, so I’m glad to see one go in his favor.

Woo-hoo! They overthrew third to catch Freel stealing, and now the Reds are up 1-5!!

  33. Red Hot Mama says:

Dunner strikes out swinging. Has he struck out looking yet this season?

  34. Red Hot Mama says:

Dude, Doumit sorta freaks me out. Those black, black eyes peeking out from undert that helmet.

  35. Red Hot Mama says:

Man, the Pirates are making the Reds pitchers look nasty.

  36. BubbaFan says:

    That’s the undefeated Pirates.

  37. Red Hot Mama says:

    For the moment. 😉

  38. smartelf says:

Stanton looks pretty good. he’s still got gas in the tank.

  39. smartelf says:

…AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!

  40. BubbaFan says:

    Now the formerly undefeated Pirates.

The Bats also won tonight, 8-1.

  41. Zeldink says:

Awesome. And that moves the Reds into a tie for first place. The battle for first, tomorrow.

  42. BubbaFan says:

Holy geez. The Cleveland game was snowed out one strike from being an official game. And the Cleveland pitcher had a no-hitter going.

Byrd’s bid at no-no interrupted by snow
