Looking on the Bright Side

Here at Red Hot Mama, we've always been about a little ironic laughter. After all: there's no crying in baseball, just bitter, caustic sarcasm.

So, with that in mind, I'm pleased to present the silver linings to the clouds in this shit-storm Reds fans have been weathering lately.

1. Matt Belisle's ERA went down tonight, all the way to 3.45.
2. The Reds can only lose one more game to the Astros this week.
3. After tomorrow, the games will be on too late to have to watch.
4. With two more errors tonight, Edwin Encarnación keeps dragging down his own trade value.
5. Placing Eric Milton on the DL will give some young, fresh-faced buck the chance he's always dreamed of: to be the next hard-luck loser.

I’m really surprised there have been no comments on this one yet.

Nah, they blew it. Went and won the game, and spoiled a perfect record. Darnit, they can’t even lose right.

    4. With two more errors tonight, Edwin Encarnación keeps dragging down his own trade value.

What a difference a day makes, eh, RHM? We now know that they traded him to the Louisville Bats for Jeff Keppinger. This adds another silver lining since Freel and Hamilton both have a position to play regularly now.

Hmmm, yeah, maybe it’s EE for Keppinger and a starting pitcher to be named later. Though not necessarily, they could still decide to let Saarloos and/or Santos have a go at it. Which, frankly, would make more sense to me than having to take another guy off the 25-man to bring up a starter from the Bats, since they already filled Milton’s slot with Burton. They can’t send Burton back down without him clearing waivers and being offered back to Oakland because he’s a Rule 5 guy.

Then again (which seems to be my official phrase of the day), I don’t think average Reds fans who buy walk-up tickets to the bleachers would start a riot in Fountain Square if they called Homer Bailey up. Especially if they sent Coffey down or DFA’ed Stanton to do it.
