Not only that, it's Arizona. It's Phoenix. It's the desert.

And Jocketty is standing there in a jacket with his collar turned up, drinking coffee.

"Dammit, we should've stayed in Florida!"

Oh, by the way...Jonny Gomes has been signed to a major league contract. I haven't seen any numbers posted by the beat writers, but according to what ESPN's Jerry Crasnick posted, it's one year at $800,000 with a $1.75 million club option for 2011 and hundreds of thousands in potential performance bonuses both years.

However, in the unlikely event that he's outrighted, his minor league salary would reportedly be only $100,000. So Jonny - do the right thing...buy Uncle Walt a year's supply of coconut milk!

Hi, Ted,
Welcome to the wonderful world of commenting on RHM. It's a pleasure to have you here.

If I implied that the Reds were at all smart in their dealings with Taveras, I apologize. That isn't at all what I was going for.

Just to be clear Mama, Taveras was signed to a minor league deal and gets major league minimum--$400,000--only if he makes the mlb roster. Regardless your keen eye for talent Zeldink, I assume he has a shot to make the 25-man roster in DC, although there is no lock that says he will. I think the Reds paid him considerably more than mlb minimum for 438 reserve outfielder atbats. He will be making much more than $400k courtesy of the A's who must pay him $3.6 million whether he plays in Syracuse or DC, that courtesy of the contract the Reds signed him to and the A's assumed in the trade late last season. That is what I understand to be the facts of the case, but I am always open to correction.

Calling Willy Taveras a "fourth outfielder" is a stretch, unless you were referring to in the minor leagues. Maybe in AAA, he'd be a serviceable 4th man.

Taveras' OPS+ last year was 48--100 is average. I'm quite sure it'll take quite a miracle for the Nationals to get anything back from their $400,000 investment.

Yes but we know he is a fourth outfielder. It took the Reds 438 atbats to sort through that when Drew Stubbs could hardly have been any worse.

The latter. I'm not actually that good at NPV calculations, plus I was in a meeting I was supposed to be paying attention to at the time I did it, but my rough estimate had the present value of the future payments somewhere in the $4M range.

Does that assume that the Mets invested the $5 million? Or is it just a cost-comparison of $5 million in 1999 dollars to the inflation-adjusted value of $1.2 million each of the future years?

Calculating the net-present-value of the annuity and discounting it back to when the call was made, it's actually a money saving choice given a 10% discount rate.

10% seems kinda high, though. Phillips couldn't have known we'd have low, even negative, inflation lately, but still...

Ratul, the other Reds fan at work, thinks he'll be a veteran presence. I'm not in the dugout to know whether the team really needs a veteran presence, but if the price is right, heck, why not?

Regarding Jocketty setting up Baker to succeed, it simply can't be done. The man is worse than if you made your management decisions by a roll of the d10. At least a die will be right a tenth of the time.

I wouldn't expect Masset to duplicate his numbers from 2009. Relievers that consistently repeat their good performances are a rare breed.

It is nice, though, that the pitching staff isn't a huge worry. The Reds have done a great job of getting good, young pitchers so that I don't think about the rotation or bullpen nearly as much as a few years ago.

What? Really? Jocketty not only manages to remove the Taveras albatross from around the club's neck by packaging him with Rosales, who didn't exactly set the world on fire last year, he actually gets two players in return?

Plus, by dumping the salaries of Taveras and Rosales, the payroll only goes up by a chump change amount after signing Cabrera?

All I can say is: Walt Jocketty - you rock, dude!

Miles' 2009 season was as disappointing as Taveras' was, but a lot of that was probably due to the injuries (first his shoulder and then his elbow). Miles can play several positions. He did have a few good years in St. Louis before crashing last year with the Cubs. He's a switch-hitter whose career splits are respectable from both sides of the plate. He has playoff experience and a WS ring with the Cardinals in '06. He runs the bases well. He will probably be a useful backup, which Taveras probably was not going to be.

The player to be named...well, I'll go out on a limb and predict that Jocketty does better with this one than the Reds did in the Chris Denorfia deal.

Nice to have a real GM in the chair.

If you don't know nick masset then you weren't watching much of anything last year. He was our primary setup guy, pitching in a lot of close games in the 8th when we had a lead. His era last year was something like 2.3 or 2.4, which is fantastic. Resigning him was crucial to having a strong bullpen in '10. Burton is good but like you said has been injured, and has struggled as a result. Hopefully he can stay healthy and be a big help to the bullpen this year.

Masset is a product of the Rangers' farm system who came over to the Reds, along with since-departed Danny Richar, in the trade that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to the White Sox.

As for the time when Casey beat the Reds in arbitration, the deck may have been stacked in The Mayor's favor. His was the first baseball arbitration case ever to be decided by a three-person panel that included two women!

Amanda wrote, "Or dashing to make a catch at the wall, only to suddenly impale the cap in the wall where it would stick like a dart in a dart board."

...and while the player attempts to extricate himself, the speedy batter circles the sacks, producing (what I am pretty sure would be) the first four-base error in major league history.

I'm not sure if it's the camera angle or if those caps really do have oversized bills. Maybe it's part of a trend of making larger hats to contain the oversized egos of certain players who're in need of such an expedient?
