That Does It: I’m Switching to Powerade

Have you seen the Gatorade commercial where they set soccer clips to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”?

Does it just make you want to slap Gatorade out of someone's hand? Is nothing sacred to these sports drink people?

    Nothing is sacred in Corporateland.

You seriously beat me to the punch. I saw the commercial yesterday and went “heyyyy!” If soccer/football wants a song, then one of the 43,938 billion people outside of the United States who watches it can write one!

    Yes – money.

As for slapping Gatorade out of someone’s hand, no. It might cause me to spill my beer. That’s alcohol abuse. Wouldn’t want to get accused of that. Somebody might mistake me for Sidney Ponson. Or Jim Bowden.

I don’t even see how this makes anyone money. Soccer fans aren’t going to appreciate the magnitude of this tune, and baseball fans are going to be put off. Maybe that rare soccer/baseball fan will like this commercial, but I doubt they’re really going to increase Gatorade’s market share.

That won’t stop ’em from trying, though. These companies pay big money to advertising firms like those on Madison Avenue to develop their ad campaigns, and sometimes they do shoot themselves in the foot.

This just might be one of those times.
