Our first Opening Day in Cincinnati

Despite having maintained a Reds blog for 7 years (happy Blog Day, RHM!) the Red Hot family has never made it out to Cincinnati for Opening Day. But tomorrow isn’t just Opening Day. It’s not even just day two of the Joey Votto quarter of a billion dollar contract extension. Tomorrow is that glorious astrological event known as The-First-Day-of-Baseball-Happening-During-Spring-Break.

It won’t happen again for another 86 years, so make sure to get out and see it while you can.

They forgot Thursday.

Our agenda tomorrow includes: parade, game, and a trip to Kroger to buy Vott-Os. We’ll be trying new ballpark food and resurrecting the Red Hot BroadCast. We’ll be hoping the Marlins perform as poorly tomorrow as they did tonight (I mean, no-hit through six by Kyle Lohse?) and crying when they don’t. Basically we’ll be living the dream.

Be sure to tune in for a recount of the day, and turn out if you can. Not only would I love to say hi in person, but the team is going to need everyone to be hitting the Food Network Hot Dog Bar a few times per game if they’re going to raise enough money to pay for that contract.

You could be the next Jeff Piecoro

Myself, I’ll be at the Holy Grail for the blueberry beer, but if you’re into this being on T.V. thing, you can kill two birds with one stone. — Amanda

The hotness coefficient

I remember when I read Moneyball that there was a throwaway comment about how, at least back in the day, baseball scouts thought that they could identify a promising player by the structure of his face. Even now, you’ll occasionally hear mention of a “good baseball face,” though I haven’t heard anyone seriously seem to think that you can judge a good baseball talent by looks alone.

He's still better looking than Yadi.In fact here at the Red Hot household tonight, we were talking about just the opposite. It started when I came across a photo of Devin Mesoraco. I told Zeldink that I remembered when Mesoraco was drafted, and how I didn’t think he was very good looking then, and I still don’t think he’s particularly easy on the eyes. Nothing personal Devin and Devin-lovers–just not my type.

Zel commented on how, often, good baseball players aren’t very good-looking. “But what about Votto?” I asked. Hell, Brandon Phillips won our NLC’s Hottest Baller contest when we did that craziness a few years back (well, once we took Bubba Crosby out of the running) and between him and Votto there’s a lot of good-lookingness and good baseball going around.
I might not be able to hit it, but I'd swing.

“Yeah, what about Randy Johnson,” which ended the argument right there. While clearly ridiculously skilled, Randy Johnson has got to be one of the least appealing men out there. Visually, anyway. I mean, he *is* the Big Unit after all.

The good news for baseball players is that they’re dudes, and it doesn’t really matter what dudes look like if they’ve got money. Even Randy Johnson had plenty of women throwing themselves at him, I’m sure.

The other good news for baseball players is that, you can always get Brad Pitt (or at least Chris Pratt) to play you in the movie.

$13 gets you a Reds LEGO man with more articulated joints than Ken Griffey Jr

If you saw the sweet Astros LEGO man I used a picture of in a post a couple days ago and thought to yourself, “I wish they had a Cincinnati Reds LEGO man,” well, have I got news for you.

Looks more like Joey Votto than that bobblehead does

I think my favorite part is how his nose looks like an unbent staple.

Spring Training is so slow

The Cincinnati Reds won a game today, with excellent performances from the pitching staff. Homer Bailey kept the ball down and shut out the Chicago White Sox over four innings. The offense managed only one run, but with Bailey and the bullpen’s scoreless performances, that was enough.

And I was bored by it.

Spring Training has been going on for a month now, and I want it to be over. I can’t even begin to imagine how the players feel.

The good news is that we’re just 17 days away from Opening Day. Two and a half weeks from the Findlay Market Parade. And two and a half weeks from the first official pitch of the 2012 season from Johnny Cueto’s hand.

It cannot get here soon enough.
