Game 20: Reds 4, Nationals 2

EZ Ramirez, getting the job doneThe Reds defeated the Nationals yesterday by a score of 4-2 to provide young Elizardo Ramirez, freshly called up from Triple A Louisville to fill in for the injured Eric Milton, with his first win.

Ramirez pitched seven plus innings, allowing two runs (earned) on six hits. Brian Shackelford allowed no hits through a third of an inning, but did hit a guy. Todd Coffey sprinted out to hold the Nats scoreless for two-thirds of an inning. David Weathers walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the ninth, but also prevented any hits to close the game out and get the save.

A few of us commented on the game as it happened, so you can get the nitty gritty there.

The win brings the Reds' record to an astounding 13-7. Tonight Dave Williams takes the mound for the Reds against Billy Traber for the Nationals. Game starts at 7:05.

This is a pitcher’s park if there ever was one. If Williams can’t exhibit a respectable showing here, then he should forget baseball and take up truck driving.

Tonight he tackles the Nats. Next week, he may very well be facing the Toledo Mud Hens.

I am not saying Dave Williams has done a good job thus far — because he hasn’t. But we need to keep this in perspective — he is a #5 pitcher. In other words you won’t see him in the post season in critical situations and he will get skipped as the schedule allows. His numbers last year were good enough to be a #5 and give him a shot. He desperately needs his first “W” and a quality start to restore his confidence. Its way too early to hit the panic button because of 2 bad starts… however if he looks bad today we should probably give Belisle a shot in the rotation. I’ve been stumping for Belisle since last year and can’t figure out why he’s not in the rotation yet. Anyhow, Elizardo’s magnificent performance yesterday gives us a lot of options as far as patching the starting staff.

Williams hardly dominated, but he kept the team in the game. I suppose that’s about as good as we can hope for.

Wow, the Bad Boy *does* have a blog. He’s updated it twice in five days, but still. I think I’ll go say hi.
