Thank You, Dan O’Brien

Sports Illustrated has ranked the top 10 prospects in baseball in a cute little photo essay. Number 9 is the Reds’ own Homer Bailey; number 1 is the Reds’ Jay Bruce. Dan “Status Quo” O’Brien wasn’t so hot general managing yesterday’s Cincinnati team, but his work with tomorrow’s team is looking pretty good.

The Cardinals are the only other NLC team who have a prospect make an appearance with Colby Rasmus coming in at number 8. The Rays were the other team with two players on the list, and it’s easy to draw comparisons between the two teams. I was surprised to see a Yankee’s representative on the list: I didn’t think the Yankees believed in prospects.

It’s the new (but not yet improved) Yankees. The old Yankees would have traded Phil Hughes for Santana. Cashman prefers to keep the kids.

Though of course, if the Yanks don’t make the post-season, Cashman will probably be fired, and Hank Steinbrenner will go on a spending spree.

Interesting that Joba Chamberlain seems to have left Phil Hughes in the dust. In the hearts of the fans, the organization, and the scouts. Though Cashman dissed him for not being “mentally tough” enough to withstand the bug swarm.
