Reds Game 2: Reds Host Diamondbacks
By Amanda

Reds Lineup
CF Corey Patterson
SS Jeff Keppinger
RF Ken Griffey Jr.
2B Brandon Phillips
LF Adam Dunn
3B Edwin Encarnación
1B Joey Votto
C Paul Bako
P Bronson Arroyo
I wanted to comment on the ludicrousness of this line-up, but then I saw the JTM commercial with Bronson Arroyo and Chris Welsh, and now I’m speechless. Wow.

Ok, first pitch is a ball, low in the zone. It’s about darn time. That pregame took forever.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
And Young is aboard on second with no outs in the first inning and Orlando Hudson sacrifices him over. Huh. Wouldn’t have expected that.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Two outs (and one an intentional one at that) and the Diamondbacks have a run. I wonder whether they’ll burn two outs per run the whole game.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
And how many pitches did it take Arroyo to get out of the first inning? Eight. Thom and the Cowboy are applauding Arizona for manufacturing a run, but I think they’re price was too high.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
I know the Snakes scored a run, but it sure didn’t feel like a good inning for them to me. That’s how you play when you’re down one or tied in the 9th, not when you get a leadoff double in the 1st.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm
This is my first time seeing Corey Patterson at the plate. Smart money says he’ll get out. I hope he at least makes the pitcher throw a few first.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Yep. He’s out. And taking three pitches to get there, he’s put Haren on pace to pitch 9 this inning. More than Arroyo at least.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm
And Keppinger is aboard! If only we could skip Patterson and go straight to the second hitter.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:18 pm
You say that only because his NOP is less than 30%.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Seven pitches for Haren to get out of the first. And I stop commenting long enough to help my kid do his daily Webkinz tasks and Arizona knocks a solo shot. Sigh.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Bottom of the second and Phillips is out. He does like to swing early in the count, but I’d like *someone* to make this guy throw some pitches. I wouldn’t have thought I’d be saying I missed Hatteberg so early.
Dunn’s going to be the one, I think.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Full count and fouling them off. Good job, Dunn.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
THIS is a fast game.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Three up, three down for the Reds. Haren is now 19 pitches in to the game.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Did you see the pregame where they talked about Arroyo looking for a bounce-back season?
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Did he mean a repeat of his career year? I’m afraid that’s not going to happen. Though he really wasn’t that bad last year, despite that 9-15 record.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Yeah, if he has another year like last year, assuming the Reds pen is better, I imagine he’ll have 12 to 15 wins. Unless they insist on having a no-hit, some-glove catcher catch all of Arroyo’s starts again.
I’m sure the team’s learned its lesson from last year. Who’s the starting catcher today?
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Patterson earned his pay tonight…
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:04 pm
PHILLIPS!!!!!!
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Too bad that darn Keppinger was clogging up the bases, or that home run would have scored!
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:09 pm
B-Phil is a fun player, isn’t he?
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Love the mohawk.
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Hi, BubbaFan. The first Red to get a homer in 2008 should be a trivia question. No one would guess that one.
April 2nd, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Haren got a double?? Holy crap.
What’s Dusty going to say to Arroyo in the top of the 5th?
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Good gravy. Haren doubled?
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Sorry about the disappearing comments. They’re in the thread, just out of order. Perhaps tonight wasn’t the best night to get the blog set on the right time zone.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Things are all fixed now.
What a crappy throw by EdE. I like his potential, but if he keeps having one of those a game, he is going to be sat quickly once Alex Gonzalez comes back.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Sigh. EdE, EdE, EdE.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Hopper at the plate, and not bunting for a base hit??
Not getting any kind of base hit. Alas.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I think he was going to sit once AGon got back no matter what. At this rate he’s going to get his ass sent down when AGon gets back.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:38 pm
It didn’t look like they gave Hopper any pitches to bunt. It’s an easy scouting report. I think it’s Hopper and former Astro Willy Taveras alone in the majors as guys who bunt for basehits.
Hey! Coffey’s in! I didn’t see his sprint.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Coffey’s in for the Reds. They’re talking about the changes he made in the spring. I seem to remember this from last season, too.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:40 pm
I wonder if EdE has an option year remaining. He did last year.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I see that Chris Duncan has a sore hamstring, via the Cardinals official site feed on the left (tyvm, CTS). That’s not going to make their outfield any better.
Oooh, boy. Coffey is NOT doing well.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Haren at the bat. The announcers seem to think it’s noteworthy, but it’s only the top of the 6th.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Dammit, why can Haren hit??
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Man, that Keppinger can hit.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I just noticed how similar my last two comments are. Mad props to me for creativity.
C’mon Griff.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Bah.
C’mon Phillips.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Bah.
C’mon defense.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Oh, Coffey’s still in.
And one runner is aboard.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Poor Coffey. If he stays with the team long enough, I expect him to pitch better than last year. Relievers can fluctuate wildly from year to year.
Hopefully he’s got a good year in him. It’s good to have a trekkie on the team.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
As much flak as EdE’s going to take for his mistakes in these first two games, Patterson has had a subtle role to play as well. 1-for-the-season isn’t a stat you should see out of your lead-off hitter, even when that 1 is a home run.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Sweet! Bako just picked off Orlando Hudson.
Ooooh, it looks like Votto didn’t get the tag on.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Whatever, the ump thought he did.
Dunn just took a third strike. Dusty turned his back in the dugout, looking disgusting.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
But why?? He didn’t walk!
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Of course, because he looked at it. Dusty will want them to *swing* for strike 3.
EdE did it to. He’s getting sent down.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Hey, Kent Mercker’s in! And he struck out someone.
There was a graphic earlier in the broadcast showing the Reds as one of the oldest teams. I thought it said the oldest player on the team was 44, but I can’t think of who that would be. Mercker’s “only” 39.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Mercker? Well…he ought to be well-rested.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Hey, it’s Freel. He’s got to have lots of pent-up energy.
C’mon Freel. Show Patterson up.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Doh: Freel flew out.
But The Cowboy said something that was pretty insightful, suggesting that Freel may be seeing some playing time at third base tomorrow.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I could see that. Wouldn’t be a bad choice, really.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
good play by EdE, just not in time to get the runner.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Affeldt is in and has walked the bases loaded. There’s one out in the top of the ninth and the Reds are down 2. The crowd is crazy with cold from the sound of it.
Good times.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:42 pm
The Reds pitching has not started off the season well. Of course, the same could be said of almost every team in the NL Central.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Eric Byrnes made contact…with his elbow out of the batters box and he’s out. Lucky for Afeldt, what with all those ducks on the pond.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Whew! Strike out to end the inning.
George Grande isn’t here to say it, but we’re all thinking it…
“It’s last round-up time for the Reds.”
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
The Reds just advertised an upcoming giveaway: a car magnet schedule. So where exactly do you stick this magnet?
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Phillips led off the 9th with a hit!
Now let’s bunt him over.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Brandon Phillips is aboard to start the bottom of the ninth.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
They put the shift on Dunn. Where are they shifting toward? The outfield?
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Sweet! Dunn went the other way and beat the shift.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Oh, hell yeah. Dunn went the other way.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Why are they talking about EdE bunting? The Reds are down by 2.
Ah, of course. How could I forget the elusive 3-run bunt?
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Of course EdE’s bunting. Baker’s the manager.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm
oh, sweet lord, he’s squaring to bunt.
Can someone make this makes sense to me?
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Now that Baker has thrown away EdE’s first two strikes, he gets to swing.
EDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Brantley: “[Encarnacion] is not a clutch player.”
Encarnacion: CRACK!
Reds win. Now why was EdE bunting?
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Good grief. Keppy’s 3 for 3 with a walk?
He was positively unreal when I saw him in spring training, and it looks like he’s keeping it up.
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Phillips, Dunn, and EdE made that happen. Not a one of them is over 30.
Just sayin’.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Baker tells the media that he wanted EdE to fail at the bunt so he could hit the home run. Good thinking Dusty. The inane stuff that comes out of his mouth… let’s just say now I understand why he keeps a toothpick in it.
