Chris Duncan has Gotten Goofier Looking
By Amanda
Nothing like a series with the Cardinals over the holiday weekend to get me excited about the Reds. I’m not sure how the Reds scored a decent guest over this weekend. For a few years there, the Reds were getting so freaking screwed on the scheduling, that I wouldn’t be surprised to see them playing a high school team during this prime baseball holiday.
Homer Bailey on the mound today, and I thought they said today was his birthday. It’s not (his is May 3), but it is Sean Casey’s birthday, so maybe they’ll win one for the Mayor. Bailey will have to stop walking people for a minute.
Starting with Albert Pujols! Yippee!!

Did something just “click” for Homer Bailey? He was shaky for those first couple batters, and then he put away Pujols and Ankiel in short order.

Dickerson lead-off double. Wait, Dickerson is leading off? How in the world is Dusty Baker allowing that??
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Reds draw first blood!!!
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Wow, what an eventful game so far. Throwing error, Votto hitting to deep right with that beautiful swing of his, and a throw-out at third from right field. This is going to be a good one.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Dang, look at Bailey go in the second inning. Seriously, did the major-league switch in his brain finally flip? I understand he’s been dominating in AAA, but he still had the bratty kid sneer those first couple starts in the show.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Love the effort, Hairston. But, ouch. Trip to the DL?
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Wow, nicely done Bailey.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I don’t think I’ve said it lately, so I’ll say it now: I love Joey Votto.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Bailey grounded out to 1st and Pujols took it himself. I don’t know why Pujols always doing that irritates me so much.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I think that at least part of it is that it seems like he thinks so much of himself that he can’t even trust his teammates to catch a toss.
To be fair to him, maybe he just sucks at the underhand lob.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Dang, Bailey’s on a roll. 12 outs in a row.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm
I love that idea. A gold glove caliber 1st baseman who never mastered the underhand toss. Or maybe he thinks it’s not manly.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Ha ha Thurston took a ball to the hip
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
He pretty much has to lose the Gold Glove these days.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Thom also does not say “damn” in the text promoting The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Maybe it’s actually in the script.

Tangent: Jon just learned that the giant water bug (or “toe biter”) is a delicacy in Thailand. Different countries are so different.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
So, I guess Bailey won’t be taking the Silver Slugger from Micah Owings any time soon. Looking good on the mound, though. Pujols is 0 for 3.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:34 pm
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY!!!!!!!!!!!
BP RBI. Second blood belongs to the Reds as well.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Hairston has a three hit night, while Pujols is 0-3. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:48 pm
0-3, which also is the score.
This could be it, kiddos. This could be the beginning of the Reds’ dominance in 2009.
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:52 pm
ninety-seven miles per hour
diz-amn
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Chris says that if Bailey is still pitching this well when Volquez comes back, the Reds will have a problem.
In my mind, they’ll finally have a solution to Bronson Arroyo.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Too bad Baker likes his veterans.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Time to pull Bailey. His accomplishment so far is plenty.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm
All right, Rhodes. Let’s not screw this up.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Goddammit. Loaded them for Pujols.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Stormy coming in, the very guy who gave up a walk-off home run to Pujols as I sat in the stands at Busch.
Maybe he’s due. At least it’s only the 8th.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Maybe they should have walked him. Or better yet: hit his ass.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Nice sac bunt, Jay!!
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Yippee! Go outside for a couple mins to catch some fireflies with the kiddo and come back to find the game tied
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:39 pm
You know what I like about this game, even though the Cards have gotten the lead again? It’s how excited they are to have scored. It’s nice to be a fan of a team that’s worthy of being excited about scoring against.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
EDWIN!
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Maybe you should go catch some more fireflies.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:59 pm
You can do it, Carlos Fisher. I believe in you.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Ack! We shouldn’t have let them go! Now it’s too dark to catch more.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Pujol’s up: I call for plunk.
Dang, they gave up a grounder to the mofo. And Thom Brennaman sucking up to the arrogant twit.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
All right, bottom of the ninth. Time to tie this bad boy up.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Ryan Franklin: 19 saves in 20 opptys and a sub-1 ERA. We need to freaking kidnap Dave Duncan.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Taveras walked! This really *is* a turning point for the team!
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:17 pm
No pressure, Joey. Keep it frosty.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:18 pm
He didn’t go you fat lump of worthlessness.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Didn’t give Votto much to hit, resulting in a walk. Now BP, what can you do for us?
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:23 pm
Not this time, I guess. Still, there’s a lot of awesomeness in this game.
July 3rd, 2009 at 9:27 pm
It’s a shame that the manager/bullpen/shortstop wasted the effort, but for the first time, Homer Bailey showed me something tonight. He was hitting 97 on the gun, his arm slot was consistent, and he commanded his pitches.
Very impressive outing. His trade value just went through the roof…but if this is any indication of how he’s going to turn out, I hope they keep him in Cinci. Along with Cueto and Volquez, the Reds could soon have three guys in the rotation who are among the best in the game.

A lot of people talked about this game as being demoralizing. While it wasn’t as easy a loss to predict as today’s Arroyo/Carpenter matchup, I didn’t find it to be the punch-in-the-gut that some did. The positive of Bailey’s performance outshone the eventual loss.
Hard to imagine them trading Bailey at this point. He’s only had the one good start, and it’s not like he’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year. Stranger things have happened though.
