The Puntastic Coffey Headline You’ve Been Waiting For

Merry Christmas, everyone! For your holiday enjoyment, Reds.com has talked with Todd Coffey about the holiday season. Here's one question:

MLB.com: Without divulging what Santa might be bringing your kids, how much do you enjoy getting gifts for your little ones?

Here's a photo of Coffey's family. I kind of think those kids won't be getting on Reds.com and spoiling their holiday surprises.

Nevertheless, click over and give it a read if you're as desperate for Reds-related content as I am.

Pardon The Off-Topic Post, But…

…it's December 23, which means that in two more days, RHM and CTS will wake up and find their living room buried in hastily discarded wrapping paper, the furniture lost beneath a large pile of toys (and the even larger pile of kids fighting over who gets to play with 'em next).

Don't laugh, either, because if you have kids, your own living room may well bear a striking resemblance to what I've just described.

Anyway, what I'm getting at here is probably obvious by now, so I'll just come right out and say it: Merry Christmas, everybody.

Speculation Swirls Over Griffey’s Broken Hand

You've probably heard by now that Ken Griffey, Jr. broke his throwing hand in a household accident. He's in a plaster cast for three weeks, and the team isn't releasing any more information than that.

Marc points out that the secrecy is just inviting speculation of the nature of the accident and the severity of the break:

You've probably seen by now that the Reds aren't going to release anything but the basic information Trent was kind enough to post earlier about the Griffey injury.

That's Griffey's call -- more so under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, which further limits the disclosure of injury-related information. The argument certainly could be made to Griffey -- and no doubt has been -- that it probably would make things easier if the Reds just said what happened, to discourage speculation that inevitably will veer into the ridiculous. But he chose not to go that route, so there you have it.

Here at Red Hot Mama, we grin wickedly at the thought of providing some of that inevitably ridiculous speculation. In fact, I would feel like I was doing you a disservice if I didn't provide some unconfirmable and (probably) wildly inaccurate information.

So here goes.

I heard Griffey broke his hand while playing the Wii. You just know he has a Wii. He probably had the first one off the line. He probably already has sprites of himself built into all the games.

You know how the Wii-mote has you swinging your arms all over the place? He was taking a big tennis swing and knocked his hand, full-speed, into his solid-gold, life-size Chia Pet. Not only did it break his hand, but a bunch of the Chia seeds got embedded in his skin. They're now sprouting like crazy.

Worse yet, when he was jumping up and down in pain from the hand thing, he knocked his head something fierce on the over-sized replica of his own bat that hangs from his ceiling, temporarily losing his vision.

So let that be a lesson to all you kids out there. Don't play with your Wii so much: it will make your palms hairy and cause you to go blind.

Merry Elfing Kriv-dawg

Wayne Krivsky's Christmas Card
We here at Red Hot Mama were lucky enough to intercept one of Wayne “Kriv-dawg” Krivsky's electronic Christmas cards.

Not really, of course, but definitely click. This will totally make your day.

Reds Trade for Conine

The Reds have traded Brad Key and Javon Moran to the Phillies for right-handed first baseman/outfielder Jeff Conine.

Check out a bunch of quotes on the deal at Marc's blog from Wayne Krivsky, Jerry Narron, and Jeff Conine.

Krivsky says something that I might not agree with but at least can actually understand:

“Continuing to look for that quality right-handed hitter, whether it was by trade route or free agency, we just felt like this was our best alternative. I’ve had him on a list of players that might be acquired by trade to fill that role that we’ve been looking for. We just felt like after talking to all our scouts, this was the best alternative that was available to us.”

Conine says:

Obviously I’ve played a lot with Alex Gonzalez – we won a World Series together and he’s probably the best shortstop I’ve ever played with. I’m looking forward to watching him in action again.”

Add to that the fact that his musical preferences should jibe well with Bronson Arroyo's (Conine performed Stone Temple Pilot's Plush on Oh Say Can You Sing?), and we might just have a positive vibe going on there.

Which is good, because in 2006, Conine hit .268 with 10 home runs. He's 40 years old. He's going to need some positive vibes from somewhere.

Brendan Harris was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
