Reds Sign Ligtenberg to Minor League Deal

According to Rotoworld, the Reds have signed RHP Kerry Ligtenberg to a minor league deal with an invite to Sarasota:

Reds signed RHP Kerry Ligtenberg to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Ligtenberg had a 3.57 ERA and 18 saves for Triple-A Iowa last season. The 35-year-old last pitched in the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2005 and had a 13.97 ERA in 9 2/3 innings. He shouldn't make the Reds.

Only 35 years old? Seems a little young for Krivsky's tastes in pitchers.

That guy was pretty good…. about 6yrs ago. Maybe he can make a comeback.

Congratulations to Kerry Ligtenberg, the 2007 winner of the Chris Hammond Award.

    Its that old saying…
throw enough shit against the wall and some of it is bound to stick.
That’s pretty much the philosophy with our “refurbished” bullpen.

I don’t mind if Krivs is throwing minor league deals against the wall, it’s when he’s chucking million dollar guaranteed contracts that I get a little annoyed.

Another guy with lots of postseason experience. Anybody besides me notice a pattern developing here?

Anyway, Ligtenberg was the Braves’ closer some years back, had 30 saves for ’em in ’98. Then he got hurt, which opened the door for John Rocker to take the job. I read somewhere this morning that he was closing in the minors and had something like 18 saves last year.

This just shows how desperate the team is for somebody to step up and take the job, at least until Everyday Eddie is ready to return. Most likely, Ligtenberg will insure that the Louisville Bats will have a decent closer this year. But I won’t complain if he has a season-long flashback to 1998 form.
