In my mind, Bonds hitting #714 does nothing to diminish Ruth’s accomplishment. To begin with, Ruth’s 714 hasn’t been the record since 1974, when hank Aaron broke it.

Anyway, look how long it took him to catch Ruth. Binds hit #700 in September of 2004, and it’s taken him 20 months to hit the next 14. It took him 13 days and 40 plate appearances to go from 713 to 714.

Know how long it took Ruth to go from 713 to 714? Four innings!!!

So, Bonds is 41 home runs behind Hank Aaron. At his current rate, he might never get there.
