Spring Training Game Thread 3/4 Reds vs Pirates at Bradenton; Part 2

With all the confusion this morning, I'm only mostly sure that this is the line-up for this afternoon's game:

The game goes into slow motion when Nuxy calls it. 2-2 to Ross, fouled straight back.

  2. smartelf says:

Lined out to the RF. Bellhorn coming up.

Yea this keyboard is despicable. Well I move to Newport in 11 days I am sure I’ll give it a cleaning before I go. I might even do it today if I am feeling up to it.

  3. BubbaFan says:

I clean my keyboard daily. No, it’s not excessive. We have a slight rodent problem at my office. If I don’t wipe down my desk and computer at the end of every work day, it attracts mice. The kind cats like, not the kind that goes with computers. <3)~~~

  4. smartelf says:

Bellhorn with a base hit. Ever since he struck out his first two appearances he has been lights out.

  5. smartelf says:

Only at Red Hot Mama — Spring Training Play by Play with added commentary PLUS adcvice regarding proper keyboard hygiene.

  6. smartelf says:

    Denorfia flys out.

  7. smartelf says:

Castro must have gotten out as well, side retired 2 runners stranded.

  8. BubbaFan says:

The Pirates announcers just introduced the Reds’ new pitcher as “Paul Coffey.”

  9. smartelf says:

Todd Coffey now pitching. 2 quick outs. Now ahead 0-2.

  10. smartelf says:

LOL… well Paul Coffey did play for the Penguins, right? I remember him from the LA Kings.

  11. Red Hot Mama says:

Wow, a rodent problem? We have occasional power surges, but that’s about it.

The CTS works in the basement of his building, and it smells of sewer more often than not there. The best part is the story he told me of talking to one of the co-presidents in the break room about it and the guy saying, “everyone always complains about the plumbing, but no one does anything about it.”

I like the idea that the CTS, a computer programmer, ought to be working on the plumbing!

  12. smartelf says:

Strikeout… Coffey had a good inning.

  13. Red Hot Mama says:

So, Bailey wasn’t totally awesome, huh?

  14. smartelf says:

    Keppinger hitting for Coffey.

  15. BubbaFan says:

I think Bailey needs more time in the minors. (I think the same of the Yankees’ young pitching phenom, Phil Hughes.). It’s more than just pitching. They need to learn to play the game. Field their positions. hold men on…and adjust when things are not going their way.

  16. smartelf says:

Bailey was good in the first and struggled mightily in the 2nd… threw two wild pitches.

Plumbers probably make more than programmers these days. Sad but true. You can always outsource to India for coding, but hey when your toilet is backed up your up shit’s creek without a paddle.

  17. smartelf says:

Keppinger got on, not sure how, and then I think it was Crosby that hit one that went off of Hernadez’ glove for a two base error. Man on 2nd and 3rd, Hatteberg up.

  18. smartelf says:

Sorry it was a one base error. Crosby at first, Keppinger at 2nd.

  19. smartelf says:

Ball 4, bases loaded. Janish running for Hatteberg.

  20. Red Hot Mama says:

Why pinch run with the bases loaded? Are they going to try the legendary triple-steal-squeeze?!

    I’d love to see that.

  21. BubbaFan says:

I haven’t actually seen any mice, but I see the traps the management puts out here and there. And I’ve seen the droppings. 😛

It’s not as bad as my old office, when I worked in NYC. A mouse fell out of the ceiling onto one of my coworker’s heads.

  22. Red Hot Mama says:

    Yay! Reds up 4-3!

  23. smartelf says:

Base hit RF, two runs in.
    PH single by Joey Votto.

  24. BubbaFan says:

Bubba got to 1B on a bouncing grounder to 2B that was misplayed.

That happens a lot with Bubba. I think his speed kind of freaks the fielders out. They rush, and make mistakes.

The Pittsburgh announcers are blaming the turf…

  25. smartelf says:

Like that video last week on YouTube of the Rats running around NYC in broad daylight, at Taco Bell and KFC I think.

As for the pinch runner, obviously they just wanted Hatte to get 3 ABs then get him out of there. No need to risk injury by leaving him on the basepaths in a meaningless game. Basically the scrubs are coming in right now.

Hamilton with a base hit, Janish comes in to score.

  26. smartelf says:

That was Herrera pitching batting practice this inning… they just pulled him after he failed to retire a batter.

  27. Red Hot Mama says:

That’s just a fact of life in NYC, though, right? I mean, you have that much metropolis, and there’s no place for the vermin to go.

If rats were falling out of the ceiling in an office building in Indy, that might just make the news. Depends on the business, I guess.

  28. smartelf says:

My kid wants to play DOOM, remember that game? So I am off for awhile. Bubba, you and RHM pick up the slack!

  29. Red Hot Mama says:

DOOM? Time to upgrade, smartelf. 😀

  30. BubbaFan says:

I loved the original DOOM. Played it through a million times, and found all the secrets. I still haven’t finished DOOM 3, though. It’s hard. And scary.

  31. Red Hot Mama says:

Bellhorn walks to force in a run and bring the Reds’ lead to 6-3. Our old friend Allan Simpson pitching for the Buccos.

Simpson can’t throw a strike, but he’s funny as hell. He may have a career as a birthday party clown or host of a children’s show.

  32. Red Hot Mama says:

Dang, a Castro sac fly brought another run while I was typing that last comment. 7-3.

  33. Red Hot Mama says:

    :O
Simpson k’d the Heartthrob. Two away.

  34. BubbaFan says:

Jeez, guys. Save some for the regular season! 😀

  35. Red Hot Mama says:

Wild pitch. THAT’s the Simpson we know and love!

  36. Red Hot Mama says:

I never played DOOM. I was more of a MYST type.

Now Simpson’s hit a guy. That’s even more the Simpson we know and love.

Keppinger’s aboard and Crosby coming to the bat. Watch your head Bubba!

  37. BubbaFan says:

So Keppinger stayed in the game?

  38. Red Hot Mama says:

I didn’t hear. I heard them say that the trainer checked him out. Moot point now, since the inning is over.

  39. BubbaFan says:

Just wondering if he was hurt. Getting hit on the hand or wrist can be nasty.

  40. Red Hot Mama says:

Brad Salmon on the mound and has retired the first two he’s faced. Get McCloud!

  41. BubbaFan says:

Sheesh. The Bucs announcers are talking about ’60s TV shows.

  42. Red Hot Mama says:

Drat. No such luck, plus a wild pitch let’s McCloud go to second.

It’s funny to listen to the Pirate’s spring training games, because I see so many of these players in Indianapolis.

’60s TV shows, huh? They’re already using up their material for the season when they’ll need stuff to talk about during them games. 😀

  43. Red Hot Mama says:

    Janish strikes out looking.

  44. BubbaFan says:

I wasn’t sure if it was a wild pitch or a stolen base.

The friend who is most responsible for making me a baseball fan is a Pirates fan, so I kind of follow them. It’s easy to root for them. It’s not like they’re a threat or anything. 😉

Maybe you’ll see Kuwata, the Japanese phenom, in Indianapolis.

  45. Red Hot Mama says:

Votto grounds out, Hopper does too. 1-2-3 inning for the Pirates. In the middle of five, the Reds lead it 7-3 (even though I’m pretty sure Marty just said 5-3).

  46. Red Hot Mama says:

The Indians play downtown, so even though we’re relatively close, it’s still over an hour drive to get to the games, plus parking downtown is a complete mess.

Still, one of these days we’re planning to move there and might just make it to more games than just those when the Bats are in town!

  47. BubbaFan says:

    Wow, they actually play downtown?

I’ve seen Indianapolis once. When I was driving with my Pirates-fan friend from Youngstown, OH to Denver, CO. We ended up going through Indianapolis. At rush hour. What a pain.

  48. Red Hot Mama says:

Coutlangus on the mound in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed a hit and walked a guy before getting the K to end the inning and strand a couple runners.

Again, Marty just said we’re going into the seventh. Did I space out for an inning?

  49. Red Hot Mama says:

Yeah, right downtown and about a block and a half from where the Colts play. On the rare occasions they play at the same time, you might as well pull out a blanket and have a picnic in the street, because you sure as heck aren’t driving anywhere.

They keep piling taxes onto parking downtown, which is not helping the city in the least. The north side of Indy has several little towns with plenty of space and free parking, so it’s cheaper and easier to drive north for your entertainment.

  50. smartelf says:

Doesn’t sound like I missed much. Yea I have newer games, but the kid saw someone play Doom and he got into it. I think its easier for him to play than the first-person shooters they have nowadays. They have added more controls and whiz-bang when really all you want is the basic simple straight forward game. I hate modern-era video games for the same reason. I liked it when there were only two buttons. 3 buttons I can barely handle. Now they want us to use the 3 action buttons plus those two at the top of the control plus, combos? Ridiculous… it becomes just pointless memorization and then I cannot enjoy the game itself.
